Of all of the memes of the internet, there are few that are known the world over. A comically drawn troll face for sarcasm. A girlfriend that looks like she would glue herself to you permanently if she could, and a Shiba Inu that is the face of Doge.

The name “doge” first appeared early back in 2005 during an episode of Homestar Runner’s puppet series. But the meme itself gained serious momentum and peaked around 2013 during the infamous “Cats vs Dogs” meme war. With cat’s seemingly in the lead and famous lead by the Icanhazcheeseburger site, cat and dog memes being staple internet currency

The origin began when an exceptionally photogenic image of Kabosu, the Shibu Inu rescued from a puppy farm in 2008. Atsuko Sato posted about the dog on their blog, and felt that the dogs face looked like a kabosu fruit, and hence adopted the name.

Cannot stop the party

Doge also is strongly associated with the use of LOLcat language, often in 2 word phrases and delivered in colourful comic sans. It is hilarious that doge chose this font as it is regarded as the most hated font on the internet but brings the quirkly and floating thoughts in the mind of a doge to life.

The Doge was named 2013’s most recognisable meme, with Dogecoin adopting the handsome shibe as their main logo and name.
